A little diversion from my regular book reviews…

I’ve always been hopeless at keeping track of time. This is especially problematic when I’m reading and writing: the hours just slip away. I could use my phone, but looking at the time leads to checking Instagram and Facebook, then inevitably clicking through to an article, which leads to a video, which I just have to tweet about, and suddenly instead of checking the time, I’m losing it again.

What I really need is watch. But what kind of watch? Ideally, one that’s stylish yet subtle and goes equally well with yoga pants for brunch, a collared shirt for work meetings and a cocktail dress for nights on the town. It also needs to be comfortable and durable. So I was thrilled when JORD Wood Watches offered me the opportunity to review their Sully Green Sandalwood watch.

JORD wood watches are based in St Louis, Missouri, and craft beautiful men’s watches and women’s watches from ebony, koa, purpleheart, zebrawood, rosewood, sandalwood, maple and bamboo. By using wood as their primary material, JORD creates playful, natural-looking timepieces. Each watch tells its own story through its unique grain and colouring, so even if you and your best friend choose the same design, your watches will still be one of a kind.

With its wide band (25mm) and bubbled bezel around the face (49mm), the Sully is a statement piece: casual and playful, yet eye-catching. I wore it out to dinner with my girlfriends the night it arrived and, never mind my new haircut and outfit, it was my Sully wood watch that snagged their attention!

From a practical point of view, I love the Sully’s large face and numbers, which make it easy to tell the time at a glance. The green sandalwood makes for a textured, vintage look and has the added advantage of being just a tad unusual while remaining carefree and understated. It’s also relatively light, just 60g according to my scales, so I barely notice the weight on my wrist. However, the thing I love most is its scent. Every time I check the time, I’m greeted with the spicy zest of sandalwood, which is particularly welcome on days when I’m chained to my desk and wishing I was exploring outdoors.

From a customer service point of view, JORD have been a delight to deal with. They sized my Sully before shipping using the measurements I gave according to their sizing chart and it arrived the perfect fit! They also included extra links and pins, just in case I needed to have it refitted by a jeweller. My watch arrived in its own little case, along with a cleaning cloth and a limited one-year warranty card. JORD had also set it to my time zone, which was a thoughtful touch.

Looks like I no longer have an excuse for losing track of time!
